Lore

Hermes

Add Lore to Hermes Agent as a memory provider.

The Hermes integration installs a Lore memory provider that puts startup memory (boot) into Hermes's system prompt, prefetches recall for each message, and adds the Lore memory tools. The installer downloads the plugin files, and you link them into Hermes yourself.

Install

Run the installer on the machine where you use Hermes:

npx @loremem/cli install --channels hermes

On Loremem Cloud, pass the server and your project token:

npx @loremem/cli install --base-url https://api.loremem.com --api-token lm_your_token --channels hermes

Then link the plugin into Hermes:

mkdir -p ~/.hermes/skills
ln -s ~/.lore/hermes/lore_memory ~/.hermes/skills/lore_memory

Restart Hermes after you link the plugin.

Note

The installer doesn't need a Hermes command. By default it picks up Hermes only when a hermes command is on your PATH. Pass --channels hermes to install the plugin files either way.

What gets installed

  • The plugin package from lore-hermes.zip, in ~/.lore/hermes/lore_memory/. It contains the memory provider and its manifest.
  • Nothing is linked into Hermes automatically. You create the ~/.hermes/skills/lore_memory link, as shown above.
  • Nine memory tools: lore_status, lore_boot, lore_get_node, lore_search, lore_list_domains, lore_create_node, lore_update_node, lore_delete_node, and lore_move_node. On a server with Skills, seven lore_skill_* tools are added.
  • At session start, the startup context from Lore becomes the boot block in Hermes's system prompt. Before each user message, Hermes prefetches recall for that message.
  • Skill tools appear when the server advertises Skills. The plugin turns them on when the server_profile in ~/.lore/config.json records Skills for the same server URL, or when LORE_SKILLS_ENABLED is 1.

Verify

  1. Run npx @loremem/cli status. The hermes line should read installed.
  2. Run ls -l ~/.hermes/skills/lore_memory. It should show a link to ~/.lore/hermes/lore_memory.
  3. Restart Hermes. Its log should include Lore memory provider initialized with your server URL.
  4. Ask Hermes to call lore_status. It should return the server's health.
  5. Send a prompt about a project that has memories. Then ask Hermes which memory nodes it was given for that prompt.

Notes

  • Config location. Hermes always reads ~/.lore/config.json from your home folder. Setting LORE_HOME doesn't change that path. LORE_HOME sets where skill work copies go.
  • Environment fallbacks. When the config file doesn't set a value, Hermes reads LORE_BASE_URL, LORE_API_TOKEN, LORE_TIMEOUT (in seconds, default 30), and LORE_DEFAULT_DOMAIN (default core).
  • Restart after changes. Restart Hermes after you link the plugin or change its settings.

Manual setup (fallback)

Use these steps only when the installer can't run. They download the same package and create the same link.

mkdir -p ~/.lore/hermes ~/.hermes/skills
curl -fsSL -o lore-hermes.zip https://github.com/FFatTiger/lore/releases/latest/download/lore-hermes.zip
unzip -qo lore-hermes.zip -d ~/.lore/hermes
rm lore-hermes.zip
ln -s ~/.lore/hermes/lore_memory ~/.hermes/skills/lore_memory

Write the server settings to ~/.lore/config.json, then restart Hermes:

{
  "base_url": "https://api.loremem.com",
  "api_token": "lm_your_token"
}

Uninstall

npx @loremem/cli uninstall --channels hermes -y
rm ~/.hermes/skills/lore_memory

The uninstaller deletes ~/.lore/hermes, but it leaves the link in Hermes. The rm command removes that link. It doesn't touch the folder the link pointed to, which the uninstaller has already deleted. Restart Hermes afterwards.

If Hermes doesn't load Lore, see Agent connection issues.
